Botajan had worked in hospitality for over 15 years when she was made redundant at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Signposted to a business administration course with Seetec Outsource, she has now secured a new role and is looking forward to building her career in a different industry.

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Botajan was working for a well-known Italian restaurant chain in Manchester city centre. The site was forced to close permanently, and Botajan, a single parent, found herself out of work.

She had been considering a change of career for some time – and was already in her second year of a degree in Business Management and Law at Manchester Metropolitan University – however she lacked the practical administration skills and experience required for most office-based roles.

A change of direction

Securing employment during the pandemic proved challenging, and Botajan’s employment advisor felt that she would benefit from additional training to help her reskill for a new role outside of the hospitality industry.

She was signposted to Seetec’s level 1 Business Administration course, a three-week short course that is delivered online to provide flexibility for learners like Botajan around childcare and other responsibilities. The course covers the principles of business administration and communication and lays the foundations for employment in a business support role.

Support to reskill

Botajan thoroughly enjoyed her experience on the business administration course. Working with her tutor Trish, and a small group of learners, she found the online classes to be relaxed and friendly. She said:

“Trish was so positive, professional and helpful. She would always join early for a chat before class began, and took time to explain the work in detail and provide useful examples.

“I found the observation session particularly helpful. Here we put our learning into practice in a role play situation, working out the best way to deal with a customer complaint. It was nerve-wracking, but the feedback from Trish was really useful and I learned a lot.”

A new opportunity

While Botajan was completing the course in business administration, the Manchester employer engagement team at Seetec Outsource alerted her to a vacancy that would be suitable for someone looking to build skills and experience within an office environment.

Botajan was offered an interview for the role of screening advisor at a branch of one of the UK’s largest employment agencies in Manchester city centre. The interview was a success and she was offered the job, which involves pre-screening and obtaining references for candidates placed by the agency.

Botajan is delighted that her course led to full-time employment and can’t wait to see where her new role takes her in future. She will also be graduating from university this summer and has ambitions to work in an organisation’s legal department once she has gained sufficient experience in a business support role.

Botajan’s tutor Trish said: “I’m thrilled that the course has helped Botajan to reskill for a new career and taken her a step closer to achieving her goals.

“Many of the individuals we work with have been forced to reassess their career choices as a result of the pandemic, and our funded adult education provision can help them build the skills and confidence they need to try something new. We wish Botajan the very best of luck on her new career path!”
