Programme overview:

As a machinist you’ll be involved in highly skilled, complex and precision work, machining components from specialist materials using conventional and/or CNC machine tools.

Applying the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours you develop on programme you’ll be able to set up, operate and adjust equipment settings for the machine tool being used, or produce, prove and/or edit programmes when using CNC equipment.

Key learning outcomes:

  • Understanding mathematical techniques, formulae and calculations involved in machining processes
  • Understanding practical and theoretical uses of machines and their applications
  • Interpreting relevant data and documentation used to produce machined components
  • Able to determine the most efficient and effective approach to machine the component
  • Able to select and set up the correct tooling and work holding devices
  • Able to set and adjust the machine operating parameters to the required specification
  • Able to select and use a range of measuring and testing equipment to check components for quality and accuracy
  • Identifying possible opportunities for improving working practices, processes and/or procedures
  • Personal responsibility, resilience and ethics
  • Complying with health and safety guidance and procedures
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills

Qualifications and certification:

Mandatory qualifications for this programme are:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering
  • Level 2 Diploma in Machining
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering
  • Level 3 Diploma in Machining

Professional recognition

On completion you will be eligible to apply for professional registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech), e.g. with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, which will support your career development.
